+River Segment - 5.0 miles

This very scenic section of the river features the largest of the Cahaba's broad shoals followed by a number of 1-2 ft. drops as you navigate to the Pratt's Ferry access. In the heart of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge lies Hargrove Shoals, located just .7 miles downstream from the Caffee Creek access. Hargrove Shoals is home to the world's largest stand of Cahaba lilies, which bloom each year between early and mid-May. It is possible on most days to make a round trip (if desired) to Hargrove Shoals by paddling down and back from Caffee Creek. If you paddle one-way, you will find yourself in Hargrove Shoald for almost a mile. If the lilies are in bloom, you will feel like you are in a botanical garden like no other! At the end of Hargrove Shoals is about a 2' drop, followed by a pronounced narrowing if the river and a series of additional narrow shoals and rock ledges, each with a 1-2 ft. drop. Navigating over these shoals/ledges may seem awkward due their angle to the flow of the river. Keep an eye out for the spots where water flows most smoothly over them, and this is where you should aim your boat. At Mile 2.7 the Little Cahaba River comes in on the left, and at this point, you will be about 1/2 way to the take-out. Keep a lookout for a particularly beautiful cliff about 1.5 miles from thetake-put. The Pratt's Ferry Access will be at a gravel bar on the left side just below the Pratt's Ferry Bridge. This property is owned by The Nature Conservancy, and access to load and unload boats behind the locked gate is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY via email at alpreserveaccess@tnc.org.
